At Scott Family McDonald’s, serving our community goes far beyond the counter. We’re committed to making a difference, and one of the ways we do that is by ensuring unused food from our restaurants doesn’t go to waste. Instead, we donate it to local food banks, soup kitchens, and charities that directly support families in need.

How It Started

Our food donation program began in July 2022 at our Towne Centre restaurant. Thanks to the dedication of Nikki Hahn, who became our resident expert, we were able to expand quickly: Greenville joined in October 2022, followed by Piqua in November 2022.

By the end of that first year, we had donated just 2,038 items. Fast forward to the end of 2024, and the number has grown to an incredible 105,969 items donated. Today, all 15 of our Ohio restaurants participate in this program, with hopes to expand into Kentucky in the future.

What We Donate

The food we donate is the same high-quality menu items our guests know and love—just unused. Instead of being thrown away, they’re helping feed our neighbors. Some of the most common items we donate include:

  • Bacon, eggs, and hash browns

  • Bagels, biscuits, English muffins, Big Mac buns, and McRib buns

  • Beef patties, crispy chicken, McChicken patties, McNuggets, and Filet-O-Fish patties

  • Baked pies, cookies, and hotcakes

From breakfast classics to signature sandwiches and sweet treats, these items go straight to organizations working to fight hunger in our communities.

No one explains the program better than Nikki Hahn, the manager who helped bring it to life:

“It’s really all about giving back to the community. Instead of wasting food throughout the day and at the end of menu changeover, we tally it up, freeze it, and local food banks that we have paired up with come and pick it up from us throughout the week. People in need then come and take what they need from them when they are open. It brings a sense of pride to the crew so that they can give back to the communities they live in — every bit counts!”

Her words capture the heart of the program: reducing waste, supporting our neighbors, and giving our crew members a chance to take pride in helping their communities.

Where It Goes

We’re proud to work with nine amazing local charities that show up each week to collect donations from our restaurants and use them to provide for families who need them most:

  • UR Daily Bread

  • FISH Fairborn Pantry

  • Gospel Training & Outreach Center

  • CAP – Greater Dayton Area

  • Grace Resurrection

  • Bethany Center

  • Holy Angels Soup Kitchen

  • First Place Food Pantry

  • Peace & Tranquility Lake Corp

Each organization has a set schedule to pick up from our restaurants, ensuring donations are put to use quickly and effectively.

A Community Effort

This program wouldn’t be possible without the teamwork of our restaurant crews, managers, and charity partners. Together, we’ve turned what could have been wasted food into nearly 106,000 meals for our neighbors—and we’re only getting started.

This effort goes beyond our Ohio restaurants. From January 2016 through July 2025, McDonald’s restaurants nationwide have donated over 4.4 million pounds of food, equivalent to 3.6 million meals, to local non-profit partners—helping families across the country.

At Scott Family McDonald’s, we’re proud to serve good food and even prouder to serve good in our communities.
